Welcome to the first blog from Ahead in Speaking. My name is Adrian Peck and I am the Head Trainer at the company. Ahead in Speaking was created to help senior business people overcome their fear of presenting and public speaking.
It has become apparent since the last financial crash that people now want to get back to old ways of doing business – face to face, rather than doing business from behind a computer screen. It is my belief that people have lost the art of presenting and communicating face to face – the time has come for these skills to be developed to their full potential.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself – it all began about 9 years ago. I had a good job with IBM and always felt that I had more to offer than just looking after a network system, so at the age of 36 I decided to hand in my notice and pursue others paths. I trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Business Coaching, Clinical Hypnotherapy and Sports Hypnosis.
Having a strong background in competitive sports and being a 400m runner for over 10 years, I decided to use my new skills to help sports people with performance anxiety, fear of losing, dealing with nerves, getting into the zone and even the fear of winning!
I had no idea how I was going to build my business, but what I decided to do right from the start was to present my skills and show how they could help sports people. I found myself a mentor to teach me the art of presenting and off I went!
I travelled the UK giving speeches and presentations – putting myself out there meant that people could see instantly who I was, what I was all about and they could make a decision very quickly if they wanted to work with me.
The advantage of all of this was I never had to advertise my business or even attend monthly networking events. Presenting for one hour in front of a group 30 – 100 people meant that I could get my message out there very quickly and efficiently.
So, why am I telling you all of this?
To become successful in my business I had to overcome the fear of presenting. I had to conquer the dread of standing in front of an audience and speaking, sometimes to my peers, and sometimes in front of people who had more experience in the subject matter than I.
How did I do this?
Firstly, I found myself a mentor – someone who could show me how to present so that my message came across with confidence, clarity and certainty.
Secondly, I used all the techniques that I teach sports people to overcome their fears and applied this to the fear of public speaking.
Ahead in Speaking is about helping business people overcome their fear of presenting and giving them the skills and techniques to present with confidence, clarity and certainty.
Until next time.
